Custom Wooden Boxes and Retail Packaging for Brands
Gift boxes, wine boxes, display boxes, trays and retail packaging in solid wood or plywood. Send the inner size, lid type, hardware, logo method and quantity per design.
Wood packaging here means boxes that are part of the product a brand sells: gift and presentation boxes, wine and spirits boxes, boxes for tea, cigars or jewelry plus display boxes and trays for retail. They are built and finished like small furniture, with hinges, clasps, magnets, inserts and a logo.
Light species such as pine, poplar and paulownia keep shipping weight down, and plywood or MDF keeps wide lids flat. The details that decide price are the joint style, the lid, the hardware, the logo method and the insert. Agree all of them on a sample before mass production, because a small change to a lid or insert can mean new tooling.
What this covers
- Gift and presentation boxes
- Wine and spirits boxes
- Tea, cigar and jewelry boxes
- Display boxes and retail trays
- Boxes with foam, fabric or wood inserts
- Small decorative crates for retail display
Wood packaging and boxes by product line
Each line has its own page with typical specs, species, construction options and the RFQ checklist factories quote from.
Wooden wine boxes
Single and multi bottle wooden wine boxes, magnum boxes and 6 or 12 bottle wine cases with sliding or hinged lids, inserts and your brand burned, printed or engraved on the lid.
How it is built
- Box or finger jointsInterlocking corners, strong and visible. Common for wine and gift boxes.
- Mitered cornersClean corners with no end grain on the faces, often reinforced with splines.
- Rabbeted and nailed or gluedSimple and low cost for larger boxes and display crates.
- Lid typesSliding, hinged, lift-off or magnetic. Each changes tolerances and hardware cost.
What to send for a quote
- Inner dimensions and wall thickness, or the product the box must hold
- Lid type, hinges, clasps or magnets
- Joint style and species, plywood or MDF
- Finish or stain color, with a color reference
- Logo method (laser engraving, hot stamping or printing) and artwork
- Insert material and layout
- Outer carton, pack quantity and quantity per design
Where orders go wrong
- Lids that stick or rattleSliding and lift-off lids change fit as the wood takes on moisture. Ask for samples conditioned to the market and a fit check before packing.
- Odor from fresh finishA box packed before the finish has cured traps solvent odor, which matters for tea, cigars and food. Ask about cure time before packing.
- Hardware misalignmentHinges and clasps set by hand drift from box to box. Ask for jigs and a check on lid alignment.
- Logo placement and depthEngraving depth and position vary without a fixture. Give tolerances on logo position and approve a reference sample.

What drives the price of a custom wooden box?
Size and species set the wood cost, and the joint, lid and hardware set most of the labor. Hinges, clasps and magnets add parts and fitting time. A logo, a fabric or foam insert and a multi-coat finish each add a step.
Do retail wooden boxes need ISPM 15 treatment?
Usually not. ISPM 15 covers wood packaging used to carry goods, and it exempts gift boxes for wine, cigars and similar goods made from processed wood, as well as plywood, MDF and wood 6 mm thick or less. Check with your freight forwarder for your destination.
Which logo methods work on wooden boxes?
Laser engraving is the most common on solid wood and gives a dark, permanent mark. Hot stamping and screen printing give a colored logo, and a metal plate or a separate insert is another option. Ask for a sample with your artwork on the actual species and finish.
How far ahead should I order boxes for a launch?
Plan for sample approval first, then production and shipping. Ask each factory for its sample time and its production time for your quantity, then work back from your launch date. Changes to the lid or insert after sample approval can add new tooling and time.
